Thanks for your interest in Old South High. We’re working hard to create the city’s most informative, engaging and unexpected journalism.
Since launching in the summer of 2012, this site has broken stories on local art fraud and hydrofracking that have been widely read far beyond Harrisonburg and picked up by other media. We’ve been at the front of coverage of current local issues like urban agriculture and street-renaming and hosted honest discussion of life events like getting laid off or receiving unexpected visits from CPS. We’ve embedded with the wild cyclists of the Tour de Burg, explained why sewer line replacement is a highly exciting event, scrutinized overblown claims about Harrisonburg’s job-creation awesomeness and generally tried to enliven and expand journalism in this wonderful city that deserves a lively and expansive journalistic scene.
Reporting and writing these stories takes time and money. Our recent posts on concealed weapons permits in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, for example, ate up dozens of hours of research, design and writing. Our last records request to the sheriff’s office came with a bill of $36.50 (and didn’t even result in a story). Rather than charge everyone for content, we’ve decided to try a pass-the-hat approach. If you feel like you’re benefiting from what you read here and would like to see it continue, please consider making a donation (sorry, not tax-deductible) that will support local, independent journalism.
Every bit helps, be it $5 or $500. Donations to Old South High are securely processed through PayPal.
